Tadoba Jungle Camp: Your Gateway to the Wild

Deepen the discovery of the jungles of Tadoba, as you opt for a night safari. Available in the Junona Gate barely 5 kms from the lodge, night safaris are a great way to enhance your overall experience of the park.

This is an opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to view the elusive nocturnal animals in their habitats. Introduced fairly recently, night safaris in Tadoba have become popular for their sightings of the leopards and tigers too.

Ride through picturesque trails inside the lodge’s eco park or go further for various excursions in the adjoining villages or the buffer zones of the park itself. Guided cycling excursions are low impact activities which allow the physically fit and adventurous guests to explore the area at their leisure.
Picnic baskets with packed food and refreshments can be carried on prior bookings.

Add a greater depth and dimension to your jungle experience with the guided nature trails. Accompanied by the park guide you will venture into the buffer zones of Tadoba namely Sitarampet trail or Agarzhari trail. These walks give you a chance to observe the nature at close quarters. If you have any specific areas of interests like birds or flora, do let the park guides know.

The forest department of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve also conducts boat safari in the backwaters of Lake Irai. Tranquil waters, mesmerising views and a host of wetland and migratory birds along with wildlife that comes to the edge of the water is a unique experience indeed.
The safari can be booked for a duration of 1-3 hours.

Paddle in the tranquil waters of Lake as you can witness the wetlands and the birds from a distance. Due to the presence of waterbodies, one can often spot many wetland and migratory birds in the region.

Tadoba is a true delight for all wildlife and nature enthusiasts due to it’s rich biodiversity. The government and park authorities have created a butterfly garden - ‘Butterfly World’ to conserve the butterfly population.

Butterflies are an important indicator of the environment. A mixture of host plants and the plants the butterflies feed on have been strategically planted to attract them. Over 80 species have been recorded including the state butterfly of Maharashtra – the Blue Mormon ( Papilio polymnestor)

Spread over five acres of land in the Agarzari village, this garden also helps in educating visitors about the importance of species beyond tigers. Learn about the life cycle of butterfly and many other interesting facts at the interpretation centre, Visitors can also see the butterflies in close proximity inside the glass house.

Providing employment to the local population, it is run primarily by the local youth thus overall assuring that local people are invested in conversation while they also benefit economically.

A true immersive experience inside the tiger country, this allows all the wildlife lovers to spend a night inside the forests of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. An ode to the traditional ‘machans’ which were elevated structures used for viewing wildlife, rustic log huts have been made above the check posts of the forest departments.

As the sun sets into the horizon and night descends making the forests dark and your line of sight limited, you rely a lot on your hearing. The sounds of nocturnal birds can be heard at a distance interspersed with the alarm calls announcing the movement of a predator like tiger or leopard. This sure is an experience that is not for the weak hearted.

These are simple and rustic accommodations and prior reservation is recommended. There is a toilet facility available too. We suggest packing an overnight kit containing additional clothing as per the season along with food and water.

Sundowners near the banks of Lake Irai are a sight to behold. Watch the sun sink behind the horizon as it casts its rose gold glow across the waters of the lake. The sky turns into the hues of red and pink and slowly everything seems to quiet down after the exciting safari of the day. Accompanied by refreshing beverages and delicious bites, you watch the spectacular sunset in the horizon. An iconic safari experience filled with quiet contemplation and calmness.

A night watching the star gazing is as humbling as it gets. Unlike the city skies which are hazy due to light and air pollution, the night skies in the wilderness are spectacular.
The lodge houses the state of art telescope that can be set up at designated areas of the lodge itself for your star gazing experience.

Excursions to the nearby villages help the guests to gain an insight into the rural life of India. These village visits are facilitated by a local guide and is a perfect way to witness the rich traditions and culture of these indigenous communities living in the fringes of the park.
Interact with the local people or observe the artisans at work as they paint the beautiful Gond paintings or the local potter called ‘kumhar’ as they make earthenware. You can also purchase some of these things to carry with you as souvenirs.

Sevagram, ‘village of service’ is an ashram (township) that was set up by Gandhi ji during India’s freedom struggle. After the famous ‘dandi march’ he decided not to go back to Sabarmati but settle down in this tiny hamlet. This is the very place which served his headquarters where he took some crucial decisions.

Home of Gandhi ji until his demise, Sevagram embodies his teachings, philosophy and way of living. It also is a fascinating place to visit as it houses not just Gandhi’s belongings but many other artefacts from the freedom struggle.

To visit Sevagram, you can either plan a day trip or visit it on the way from or to Nagpur from Tadoba Jungle Camp.

Around 150 kms from Nagpur, on the way to Tadoba, there is an ancient temple of Shwetambar Jain Sect. ‘Shwetambar’ literally meaning ‘ white-clad’ are one of the two main sects of Jainism and is a direct reference to the ascetic’s practise of wearing white clothes.
The temple is dedicated to the 23rd Jain Tirthankar Parshavnath, also known as Kesariyaji Parshvanath. Popularly acknowledged as a reviver of Jainism, Parshvanatha is one of the earliest Tirthankaras who are acknowledged as historical figures. This temple is known for it’s beautiful architecture, making it an interesting detour between Nagpur and Tadoba.

Established in 1949 by the social worker and social activist, Baba Amte, Anandvan was meant to be a self reliant community which aimed to give a place to leprosy patients usually shunned by the families and the society alike. With a goal to give marginalised people a dignified life and restoring a sense of pride, Anandvan also provides vocational training. Anandvan now is working towards becoming a SMART village – Sustainable, Measurable, Affordable, Replicable & Technologically Advanced. It is a holistic approach towards development and living sustainably which can also serve as a guideline for all villages.

Situated in Warora, the visitors can visit Anandvan on the way from Nagpur to Tadoba Jungle Camp. It is a detour of appx. an hour. As a visitor you can also support the efforts by purchasing the various products that is made by the people of the community.

Situated at the confluence of three rivers, on the borders of Maharastra and Chattisgarh, Hemalkasa is known for its Lok Biradari Prakalp Project. Founded in 1973 by Baba Amte with his son Dr. Prakash Amte and his daughter in law Dr. Mandakini Amte, this social project works towards the empowerment and integrated development of the primitive tribe - Madia Gond. Living in the remote parts of the area, this tribe was facing the man- animal conflict which comes with living in the proximity of the forests. Additionally, there was a lack of healthcare and other basic facilities too. Through Lok Biradari Prakalp, these issues are being worked towards along with the upliftment of the community as a whole through giving them access to education and making them aware of their rights.

While you’re in the area, do not miss visiting the unique Amte’s Animal Ark. Designed as a rescue and conservation shelter for orphaned animals, it currently houses over 110 animals ranging from birds (like peafowls, owls), to herbivores (like Chital, Black buck and Chowsingha) and even predators like leopards, jackals and sloth bears. Traditionally, Madia Gond tribes hunted for animals and this shelter was opened to conserve them. If anyone from the tribes give orphaned animals to the shelter, they get rice, vegetables and clothing in exchange.

To visit Hemalkasa, you can plan a day trip from Tadoba Jungle Camp. Leave early morning at around 4 am to reach at the visiting hours between 8 am – 11 am. Spend a couple of hours exploring this unique project, followed by lunch as we head back to the lodge in time for a sundowner. It takes appx. 4.5 hours to visit from the lodge to Hemalkasa.

Established in 1967, amongst the 1200 acres of land granted by the government, Somnath was a project designed to rehabilitate leprosy afflicted patients from Anandvan. The entire land was developed into agriculture and other opportunities to earn one’s livelihood. Initially, the land was not an agricultural land but due to the various water harvesting projects and extensive research and implementation on issues like replenishing the soil nutrition and best practises, it is now the agricultural backbone of the region.

Somnath has successfully executed a myriad of environmental and water conservation initiatives one of which is a check dam made out of waste rubber tyres and plastic. Interestingly, it is one of the few projects that accepts volunteers too and they do share their best practises with the aim of educating and benefiting other farmers too.
